I was thinking about the death of democracy
Looking up into the midday sun
Up above the hawks were circling
Waiting for their opportunity to come
I’ve been waiting for some kind of chance
For the right circumstance
Up north the glaciers weep into lakes
The floods are due in a month’s time
Out east they’re talking secession again
And reinforcements have just arrived
Feels like I’ve seen this one before
I know the game I know the score
In the capital city things are going fine
For the grifters and the cons
The machinery of state has been left unattended
And it’s rusting in the midday sun
It feels like just a matter of time
Before this is your and mine
I’ve heard all those stories of past glories
Rock and roll on the TV shows
On the east coast they are up with the sun
Working hard to get that dough
Our evening had already begun
We were thinking about television shows
The paper tells the story in freshly printed words
Of unsolved murders, water rights
And I turn right to the games and fold the pages over
And find a place with a breeze and some light
Time must take away all that you were
Be seen in order to occur
Expecting things to go wrong
You can’t expect things to go the way that you want
You’ve got to make some friends and improvise
You’ve got to know who’s reliable
